Final Concept Sketch Design of CubeHerb Garden

Preparing Presentation Slide + Design

We had another group discussion, at Barbican Centre, as our final meeting together to design, organise and rehearse our slides presentation for Tuesday. We also aimed to compile and discuss our written text on the same day.

Basil sample

We can think how QR-code (Quick-Response code) connected with information can be applied in our garden. Nowadays, smart phone is equipped with the function of scanning QR code so as to get further information.

Kitchen Herb Usage Chart

In kitchen, how do we use herb as ingredients with our meal? What kinds of PERFECT combination with herb and soup/vegetable/pork/beef/others? The answer can be found in Testful Garden website. Therefore, we also can organze herbs we can put into our blueprint of Cubeherb.

In addition, in order to illustrate our mutiplecultures brought by international students at Goldsmiths, we can design a event which encourages students to propose their family herbs in our garden. In this event, the information related to food cultures based on herbs can be exchanged.

Bottle herb garden

We believe that herb is easy to grow in our everyday life. It would be wonderful that we can ues recycled material as containers or structures for herb. This project shows as that kind of idea. Plastic soda bottles are cutten  and linked vertically together to grow herb individually. The projet inspires us something.

1. we can design vertical growing bed for herb on the wall. It  can makes good use of the space. Individual growing bed is a good way to avoid some herb, such as mint, from over growing to invade the rest space in which belong to some herbs.

2. Using recycle materials is a good practice. We have to learn and teach people how to deal with these items to improve our life quality.

The herb project

How food growing happen at campus? I try to find out some projects running in reality. The Herb Project is a joint project of the Holistic Teaching Garden and The Texas A&M University Dining. They choose to grow edible herbs and use them in the meal served for students and staff.

With season changes, gardener can arrange various kinds of perennial herbs and  warm-season herbs to be planted in garden to meet the demand of cantine and cafe.

The project inspires us to think about some issues in our garden.
1. Gardener is essential for Cubeherb. He/She can assist us to maintain the garden and deliver professional knowledge regarding garden.

2.Edible herbs are important for our garden. We should collect more herb information. Let people can understand  herbs via our garden.

Cubeherb + Mushroom Garden Concept Design Sketches

LeeHaYu's iD + Brainstorming

As shown below is our initial brainstorming of urban green project:

and this is our final brainstorming of our final concept and design for our Goldsmiths Urban Garden:

Our sketch ideas of Cubeherb + Mushroom project

During our group meeting, we came up with ideas of how our Herbs + Mushrooms garden structures will be presented. We were thinking of creating the garden space that people can interact with the structures and movable within the space at the same time making a playful environment. Credits to one of our group member, Chueh Ying-Lee, who drew the sketches as shown on this post, in order to convey our group ideas visually.

Cubeherb

After discussion, finally we decided to propose our garden, Cubeherb, in Site 1 instead of Site 4 located in residential hall. Site 1 is not only closed to main entrance of Goldsmiths College, but also surrounded by cantine, caf'e, and library. We hope to create a space for growing herb and food at campus. In addition, we would like to arrange a series of workshops in which invite students and community to get involved our garden.

Rehearsal for Reading Presentation

Urban wild things: a cosmopolitical experiment

Rehearsing at the New Building cantine space feels more warmer rather than at our studio and plus its close to food, we need food to boost up our energy for our reading night rehearsal. Have a look at our reading guideline below.

The Union Street Urban Orchard

The project was orchestrated by Heather Ring of the Wayward Plant Registry and The Architecture Foundation, and opened in July 2010 as part of the London Festival of Architecture. It aims to document the process by which it was conceived, constructed and used and to present the Urban Orchard as a case study to inspire others to think creatively about how empty spaces in the city can be used.

Assessment of sites

Today, we discussed main ideas of our garden at Goldsmiths campus. In addition, the big picture of live garden become much clear. Further more, we attempted to transform the aims of garden into criteria which can help us to sort out the data from fieldwork. Therefore, we took conditions of each site into account and assessed them by our consensus. Finally, we believe that water, food connection, compost, and space for storage and tool are important factors which should be concerned in the process of developing garden proposal.

King's Cross Central Skip Garden

King’s Cross is located in central London where more than thousands people travel by. At the same time, many constructions have continuing at amazing race. Is it possible to find a urban garden in this busy area? Yes!! In spring, 2009, the Skip Garden had created by by volunteers from from the Guardian and the Observer. Many youth from local community and construction apprentices got involved in this project as well. Skip Garden was designed with concept of portability in order to be harvested in other places as different areas in King’s Cross has been developed in different periods. For instance, volunteers was taught to make movable greenhouse bicycles by themselves. Therefore, they  could replace some vegetable gardens temporarily, even deliver food to restaurants directly.
In this case, I found something meaningful. First of all , young people had opportunities to participate in community affairs in close response to  global environmental issues.  Besides, children acquired knowledge of their  daily intake  from experiencing, not just from reading. In terms of design, the image of  construction in King’s Cross could be found in some raised beds. Finally,  to certain extent, this movement also made people aware of natural power from local food growing  in high-density built environment. I hope to know more news about Skip Gradens. You also can find  Skip Garden in Youtube .

An Art Park Sprouts Where New Buildings Were to Grow: LentSpace

Green City Rooftops

Brooklyn Grange is a commercial organic farm located on New York City rooftops. They grow vegetables in the city and sell them to local people and businesses. Their goal is to improve access to very good food, to connect city people more closely to farms and food production, and to make urban farming a viable enterprise and livelihood.

Abbey Gardens - What will the harvest be?

This morning our group and the rest of the MA technonatures visited a food growing site located in West Ham within London borough of Newham. It is a garden where anyone can come and join, learn how to grow and harvest organic vegetables, fruit and flowers. Basically this green garden is a community garden. It was amazing to see various of fruits and vegetables are growing.

Sketches of Proposal Sites

The fieldwork which was successfully accomplished yesterday, gives us an initial start to be close and familiar with each other ways of doing work. We started at 10:00am in the studio with our group discussion based on individual readings about green urban. Roughly around 11:00am, we began our fieldwork. However, before we decided the final site, we explored five areas within Goldsmiths campus which we thought the most suitable and feasible area to develop our Green Garden Proposal. Despite the depressing weather, we managed to get them all done before dawn. As you can see, I have posted sketches of the five chosen sites that we all picked and I drew them during our fieldwork.

What's our next plan team - shall we have a discuss which site is the most preferable?  ^__^

Sites photos on the run!!

The five potential chosen sites to be taken into consideration and discuss within the team.

Our Fieldwork

Today, we really did a good fieldwork at Goldsmith campus. Enjoyed the moment we shared with each other. Hope everyone learns something new from each other and from our work!
